Spotlight: Chloë McKenna, Social Media Strategist

My name is Chloë and I head up international social media here at Oban. My role is very varied and no two days are ever the same! My duties range from helping clients to launch global social media campaigns to identifying in-market influencers and conducting analysis whilst also providing consultation, technical support and training on all things social.

  • How and when did you start working in international digital marketing?

After graduating from Sussex University with a degree in English Literature I knew that I wanted to do something creative and the digital marketing industry appealed to me. I secured an internship at an agency in London and loved the fast-paced nature of the job. Since then I have worked in a variety of different roles in the digital field including Content, SEO, UX and now Social Media. The rest, as they say, is history!

  • What do you enjoy about it?

I am a naturally sociable (and nosey) person so having a job that lets me listen to conversations and allows me to get involved in those discussions is a perfect fit. I also have a passion for travelling and gaining an understanding of other cultures; specialising in international marketing means I get to learn how users in other countries use the internet and social media which is fascinating.

  • What are the biggest challenges you face?

The social media landscape changes constantly so it can be a challenge keeping abreast of all the latest developments. It is hard enough staying on top of all the trends for local platforms like Facebook, Twitter Pinterest, Snapchat and so on… But when you factor in all the international social networks we deal with like Weibo, VKontakte and Line (to name but a few) – there is a lot to consider! Luckily I work with an amazing and knowledgeable team of in-market experts who live and breathe social media in their respective markets who make sure we always stay up-to-date.

  • What would you be doing if you didn’t have a career in international digital marketing?

I love animals and previously wanted to be a conservationist. This was inspired by watching endless episodes of The Really Wild Show and nature documentaries as a child and aspiring to be just like Michaela Strachan or David Attenborough. This being said, as an adult the closest I get to nature is camping at Bestival so perhaps it was never meant to be…

  • What countries have you visited? Which is your favorite and why?

I have been lucky enough to visit some amazing countries over the last few years including Brazil, the USA and most recently Mexico. Mexico has a special place in my heart as it is a beautiful country and the people are warm and welcoming. I love the art, culture and the food is amazing!

  • Outside of work hours, you’ll find me…

Travelling, making pottery, painting, meeting friends and family or eating a nice vegetarian meal somewhere and writing about it on my blog.

Innocent do a great job of creating social media campaigns with personality, Twitter is amazing for listening in on real-time conversations and my digital SLR camera helps me to keep a record of all my travels which is lovely to look back on.
